Transforming education in Tuvalu

Tuvalu has a primary education completion rate of 95%, but over 30% of children do not transition from primary to secondary education, and the upper secondary completion rate is around 50%.

Sector challenges include low learning levels and high rates of grade repetition, dropout and out-of-school children.

The government is working with GPE and other partners to unlock system-wide change and ensure equitable access to quality education for all learners.

Tuvalu’s Partnership Compact marks the country’s commitment to strengthen sector coordination and prioritize education financing to ensure human capital and sustainable development. Interventions aim to boost students’ foundational skills through improved provision of pre-primary and primary education.

A focus on inclusive education will help ensure all students, regardless of learning disabilities or special needs, have access to education at all levels. Alternative education pathways and remedial opportunities will support students’ progression throughout the education system.

Better teacher standards, training, resourcing and support systems are expected to increase the quality of teaching.
